Bend, Oregon

Cascades Academy will host the, "Together, we RISE," FIRST Robotics Kickoff Celebration on Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. on its campus in Bend.  Kickoff celebrations will be held in 140 different locations across the United States and will include a breakfast followed by a viewing of the Kickoff Celebration Broadcast, hosted by DeejayKnight and Blair Hundertmark.  Kickoff ignites the start of the 2020 FIRST® Robotics Competition season, INFINITE RECHARGE. Teams from around the galaxy will gather online and at kickoff locations to watch the game reveal and celebrate the upcoming challenges, heart-pounding thrills, and perseverance of the season ahead.

In the upcoming FIRST Robotics season, teams of students ages 14-18 will be challenged to design, build, and program industrial-sized robots to compete in an alliance format against like-minded competitors.

Early Saturday morning, teams will gather to watch the livestream release video, which is taking place on the east coast.  Once that event has taken place, the teams have six weeks to design, build and test their robots before heading to the competition.  The schedule is intense, with team members spending upward of 15 hours per week working on the robot.

The Cascades Academy team, Mystic Biscuit, has competed in the FIRST Robotics competitions for the last three seasons and is excited about the upcoming challenge.  Other teams from Bend will be at Cascades Academy for the kickoff, including Summit High School, Chaos Theory, Mountain View High School, and Desert Droids.

"We are so excited to host this event for the local teen robotics community," said Julie Amberg, Head of School at Cascades Academy.  "Our program places a huge emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and on giving students opportunities to work through challenges and learn from them in a hands-on, experiential way.  FIRST Robotics competitions give students a chance to do just that."  According to FIRST's websiteparticipation is proven to encourage students to pursue education and careers in STEM-related fields and inspire them to become leaders and innovators. Through FIRST, students develop valuable, real-world skills applicable to all career choices and outcomes.
